Attribution arguments last for years because everyone is comparing numbers built on different rules. Fix the rules first; the model matters less than the consistency.

What each model over-credits

  • Last click: over-credits capture channels like branded search
  • First click: over-credits awareness channels
  • Linear: flattens genuinely decisive touches
  • Time decay: rewards recency, punishes long sales cycles
  • Data-driven: needs volume most accounts do not have

Choose the model you can defend

A defensible model is one where you can explain in a sentence why a channel got credit, and where the same rule applied last quarter.

Consistency beats sophistication. A simple model applied identically everywhere produces better decisions than a complex model applied unevenly.

Validate with holdouts

  1. Pause or geo-hold one channel for a full conversion cycle.
  2. Measure total revenue, not channel-reported revenue.
  3. Compare the observed drop to the model's predicted contribution.
  4. Adjust weighting where the gap is persistent.

Frequently asked questions

Which attribution model is most accurate?
None of them are accurate in an absolute sense. Pick the model whose bias you understand, apply it consistently, and validate direction with holdout tests.
Do I need a data warehouse to do this?
No. You need consistent conversion definitions, connected CRM data and one standard applied across every channel.
